The congregation of the sisters of charity of Jesus and Mary is a religious institute founded in Belgium. Our first house began in a small village in Lovendegam,Belgium. The Congregation spread to different parts of the globe: Netherlands, Ireland, England, Africa, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Asia. The missionaries came to India (Lahore) in the year 1897 (the then undivided India). In 1901 another convent was started in Dalhousie, Himachal Pradesh. The country was divided into Pakistan and India in the year 1947.Slowly but steadily the congregation began to spread to different parts of India. As the membership and convents increased, it was very difficult for administer the Province from one place. An urgent need was felt to divide the Indian Province into two for better administration and efficacy of the apostolates. Hence in 1993 the Indian Province was divided into two Provinces: Delhi and Ranchi.
The unit of SCJM Edappally belongs to Delhi province and our registered office is in New Delhi. Our mission is to do all types of works of charity-serving the poor in the hospitals, in the home for elderly, running schools, home for the differently abled children and socio - Pastoral work.
The mission in Edappally began in the year 1978. It was a place for ‘come and see’ programme for young girls who desired to join the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Jesus and Mary. Many girls from different states came to have a lived experience of Religious life and the richness and diversity of various cultures, languages and traditions were respected and accepted. Later it became a formation house for those young girls who desired to continue to be Sisters with due formation.
Though sisters were few in the community, slowly other forms of ministries beckoned them to move out into other fields of action. The sisters took active part in all the activities of the local church. The formees were engaged in various activities of the parish such as preparing for Holy Mass, decoration of the Church, singing, etc…
The sisters were engaged in the collaborative ministry by teaching in Mary Matha School run by Adoration sisters. From 1989 to 1997 sisters were teaching in that School.
Sisters were taking catechism in the parish, visiting families and caring for their spiritual needs. needs.
Sisters worked in the MAJ hospital as staff nurses and took care of the needy.
The programmes conducted by the Sisters for the Empowerment of women, biogas training, teenagers’ camp, life orientation, personality development, skill training programme, etc. helped the villagers to come up in life. 1997 to 2006 Sr. Lisa was an active partner in the social ministry.
Every first and third Sunday of the month was especially dedicated for the Jail ministry. Sisters prepared the inmates for the Holy Mass and prayed with them. It was also an occasion to be one with them in their pain and struggles.
Monthly meetings with the poor villagers helped us to know their needs. Many poor women and children profited from it; they were given food and materials for their daily living .
In 2016 the Province laid foundation for a new ministry that is day care center for the senior citizens. The house was named after our Founder ‘Triest Home’. Few seniors joined and spend their time in the company of one another and the Sisters by sharing their lives, caring for them, praying, playing and cooking andteaching them tailoring, etc.
Reading the signs of the time and considering the need of the people, the day care home is converted to ‘CARITAS HOME FOR ELDERLY’, where the elderly are taken care day and night in the evening of their lives. It is a calm and serene place, with the beauty of the nature around in the campus where they can relax and spend their time.
The house has always been a restful place for many travelers both SCJMs and others too. Many group of students, staff from schools and colleges of north occasionally visited the place.
